US Steel due to deliver update on benzene leak

GARY, Ind. (AP) - U.S. Steel's Gary Works is due to give an update Tuesday on a $1.4 million treatment system to stop the spread of a benzene leak into Lake Michigan.

The steel mill will hold a quarterly public update in which it's expected to discuss the installation of more than 100 groundwater monitoring wells around the perimeter of the Gary Works. The treatment system is part of an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Gary Works revealed in March that it had been leaking benzene into Lake Michigan for several years, probably from a former tank farm. It also found benzene in groundwater near the plume at levels up to 600 times the federal limit for drinking water.

The EPA has said the benzene does not appear threaten drinking water.

Gary is about 30 miles southeast of Chicago.
