Update: Woman's Body Pulled From the Lake, Identity Unknown

The death of an unidentified woman whose body was found washed up on the shore of Lake Michigan remains a mystery Wednesday after an autopsy could not determine a manner of death.

A man and his son walking along the lake found the body washed up on the boulders near Promontory Point on the South Side on Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified woman -- about six-feet tall and black -- was found about 3 p.m. near 5401 S. Lake Shore Dr., according to Prairie District Police Lt. Mark Aducci.

The police Marine Unit and the Chicago Fire Department retrieved the body, which was taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, the lieutenant said.

The medical examiner’s office said the body appears to be an African-American female, whose age and identity remained unknown as of Wednesday afternoon.

An autopsy Wednesday showed the woman died of drowning, but the manner of death (suicide, homicide or accident) was undetermined, according to a report from the medical examiner's office.

The body did not show any signs of violence, according to Wentworth Area detectives, who are conducting a death investigation.
