Three of six suspects arrested in connection with a March 6 shooting near a south suburban elementary school that left one man dead and another wounded were indicted on murder charges on Friday.
Greg Morgan, 16; Quainka Clayton, 35; and Dominique Clayton, 17, all of 14340 Kimbark Ave. in Dolton, were formally charged with four counts each of first-degree murder, two counts each of attempted first-degree murder and two counts each of aggravated battery, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
All remain in the Cook County Jail on $300,000 bond each, authorities said.
Also being held in Cook County Jail in connection with the case are Javon Dockery, 22, and Dion Davis, 23, Simonton said. Bond was set Sunday at $1 million each.
Dockery was arrested March 20 in Iowa with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals-Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, and Cedar Rapids police, according to South Holland police. Davis turned himself in to South Holland police March 22.
The sixth suspect, David Clayton, 31, was arrested March 20 near Gray, Ga., with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals-South East Regional Fugitive Task Force and Jones County Sheriff’s office, according to police. He is being held in Jones County awaiting extradition, the release said.
On March 6, the six allegedly fatally shot Kenneth Thomas and wounded his younger brother Maverick McGee in retaliation for an earlier robbery.
Police claim McGee allegedly robbed Morgan during a dice game on March 5 in Dolton. After the robbery, Morgan began to hatch a plan to retaliate, police said.
Morgan enlisted the help of his mother Quainka Clayton and her sister Dominique Clayton, as well as David Clayton, of the Kimbark Avenue address; Dockery, of 5246 S. Morgan St. in Chicago; and Davis, of 12620 S. Racine Ave. in Calumet Park, according to police.
Around 3:30 p.m. March 6, Thomas and McGee left their home in Dolton and were walking to a friend’s house northbound on Drexel Avenue when the group of offenders confronted them. As they tried to flee, Dockery and Davis exited Quainka Clayton’s car and ran after them, both firing handguns and striking both brothers. The group then fled the scene, police said.
Officers responding to calls of shots fired near 152nd Street and Drexel Avenue found Thomas dead in a field behind Christ Our Savior School on 154th Street, according to South Holland Police Chief Warren Millsaps. An autopsy showed he suffered a gunshot wound to the back.
McGee was found near 152nd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. He was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, said Millsaps. He was shot in the chest, court records said.
Dockery and Davis are scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 10 at the Markham Courthouse, Simonton said, while Greg Morgan, Quainka Clayton and Dominique Clayton are scheduled for arraignment on April 15 in Markham. |
