U Of C Alerted After Woman Fights Off Attacker

CHICAGO (STNG)  -- The University of Chicago has alerted staff and students of an attack on a woman that occurred on the school's Hyde Park campus Monday night.

About 9:20 p.m., a woman was walking at 1116 E. 59th St. when she was struck from behind and pushed to the ground by a man who tried to remove her slacks, according to a community alert from the university.

The woman fought the man and ran to a nearby U of C police emergency phone, saw a passing university police squad car and told the officer of the attack. The offender was described as a male, white or Hispanic, 6-feet tall, with bushy hair, wearing dark clothing.

In the wake of the attack, the university is urging students and staff to avoid isolated bus or train stops, especially at times when few other people are around. Additionally, if they are confronted by a person who demands money or possessions, give what is demanded and create a safe distance.

If anyone has any information related to this incident or if any suspicious activity is witnessed around the campus, the university asks that it is reported immediately to the Chicago Police Department (911) or the University of Chicago Police Department—123 from a University phone or (773)702-8181 from other phones.
