Two killed in fiery South Side crash

CHICAGO (STNG) -- Two men who were killed in a fiery three-vehicle crash on the Far South Side early Sunday in the South Chicago neighborhood have been identified.
Authorities said the driver of the BMW which burst into flames after striking a barrier was a U.S. Navy veteran. A spokesperson for the U.S. Navy could not be reached for comment immediately.
The three-car accident happened about 12:20 a.m. at 3236 E. 106th St., police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.
An eastbound BMW attempted to pass another vehicle, but the driver lost control and struck two other vehicles -- a Ford Focus and a Chevrolet -- then the barrier of a bridge, Kubiak said.
The BMW caught fire upon impact with the bridge and both men inside became trapped, Kubiak said.
The driver of the BMW was identified as Alejandro Ortega, 29, of 10425 S. Ave. N, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which said both men were dead on the scene.
David Mendoza, in his 20s, of 10000 South Avenue L, was also killed in the wreck.
A Sunday autopsy determined both men died of multiple injuries from an automobile accident and their deaths were ruled accidents, the medical examiner’s office said.
Police Major Accident Investigation Unit detective is investigating.
