Two Problems With New Trier's Yearbook

WINNETKA, Ill. (WBBM) -- Thirty years from now, students from New Trier High School's Class of 2009 will probably get a good laugh from it.
But two photos published in the New Trier yearbook, Trevia, have administrators up in arms.
One photo shows a couple embracing; the girl is holding a can of beer. The other photo, part of the Homecoming spread, shows a male student giving the photographer a "one-finger salute."

One parent who examined the yearbook, following its release, said the Homecoming photo appears to be of the same quality as others in the yearbook, while the photo of the couple with the beer appears to be clearly inferior.
New Trier Supt. Linda Yonke focused Thursday on the photo including the beer can in an e-mail to parents, in which she indicated that the beer can photo was not in the yearbook when the advisor cleared Trevia for publication.
"The photo on that page was changed without the knowledge or permission of the sponsor (faculty advisor)," Yonke wrote. "Clearly, the content of the picture and its inclusion in the yearbook are contrary to our principles and values as a school community."
Yonke said administrators are investigating "how and why" the photos were included. She promised "appropriate disciplinary action" if those responsible are found.
The photos were discovered after the Trevia was distributed to students Wednesday.
Although it's unclear whether the reaction has been complaints or snickers, Yonke felt obliged to offer an immediate apology in her e-mail.
"We are sorry if this picture creates a negative view of what is normally a high quality New Trier publication," she wrote.
