CHICAGO (STNG) -- A 17-year-old northwest suburban girl died Thursday night -- almost two months after a North Side crash in which her 19-year-old sister drove a car in the wrong direction on Lake Shore Drive while under the influence, police said.
Paige Dougherty, 17, of Des Plaines, who was involved in a September crash at 4500 N. Lake Shore Dr., was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m. Thursday at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The crash happened about 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 5, according to police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor, who said the victim's sister, 19-year-old Kelly Dougherty, also of Des Plaines, was the driver of the car. Kelly Dougherty remains hospitalized with injuries from the crash as of Friday morning.
Paige Doughtery was the passenger in a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Lake Shore Drive, authorities said. Kelly Dougherty, the driver, was cited with failure to reduce speed, driving while under the influence, not being able to provide a driver's license and traveling the wrong way on a one-way street, Taylor said.
"It's very tragic because the two girls are sisters," Taylor said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday, the medical examiner' office said.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
