Skunks Alive! Critters Make A Comeback

(WBBM) - There’s a stinky situation growing the in the suburbs.

The story from WBBM Suburban Bureau Chief Julie Mann.

The population of skunks is on the rise.  The Daily Herald reports rabies killed off a good portion of suburban skunks back in the 1990’s, but experts say the foul spraying animals are making a comeback.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reports a 17 percent increase in skunk road kill.  A trapping expert tells the paper he has captured nearly 400 skunks locally in the last year which three times as many five years ago.

Skunk spray can be detected miles away. They have a poor sense of sight, hearing and smell and usually meet their end because of  disease, vehicles or farm machinery.
