School Bus Safety Gets Tougher

CHICAGO (WBBM)  -- A new law signed by Governor Quinn Tuesday, is aimed at improving school bus safety. WBBM's Regine Schlesinger reports it was prompted by several stories of a child being left behind on a bus.

Secretary of State Jesse White hopes the new law, which takes effect immediately, will mean that children will never again be left to spend hours stranded on a bus.

He says the law requires the driver to do a complete inspection of the bus after completing a shift. If a driver should leave a child behind on a bus, the secretary of state's office can suspend his or her license.

The law also requires all drivers to be equipped with 2-way radios so they're accessible at any time when they're driving.
