Rude and hasty gate agent gets American Airlines sued
|
CHICAGO (STNG) -- A lawsuit filed against American Airlines Monday claims one of its gate agents working at O'Hare Airport allegedly made a racist remark to a customer and grabbed her stroller out of her hands, causing her to nearly drop her 3-month-old baby to the ground.
According to the suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, Gerard and Emi Mallon were preparing to board American flight No. 1502 to Tampa from O'Hare with their 3-month-old daughter Emmara on June 11, 2009.
Emi was holding Baby Emmara and attempting to pack her stroller into a travel bag to be checked at the gate when American employee Rod McLay approached and began rushing her, the suit said. Emi, of Japanese descent, asked McLay for help, to which he allegedly responded with a racist remark and said, "Honey, we don't gift-wrap here."
McLay then allegedly jerked the stroller out of Emi's hands, causing her to lose control of Baby Emmara who fell backwards and nearly hit the floor, the suit said.
Baby Emmara's head and neck were hyper-extended in the incident, resulting in permanent injury, the suit said.
The seven-count suit -- claiming willful and wanton conduct, negligence and family expense act against American and McLay --seeks $50,000 on each count plus legal costs.
