Reward Offered For 'Day Break Bandit'

CHICAGO (STNG) ― The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the "Day Break Bandit," suspected in the armed robberies of least two banks in the south suburbs this year.

Most recently, the bandit, known for holding up banks as they open for the day, robbed a Harris Bank branch at 15101 S. Route 59 in Plainfield, according to an FBI release.

On Oct. 30, witnesses told police the bandit was waiting outside as employees arrived to open. As a female employee approached the door, he displayed a handgun and forced her into the bank, the release said.

The robber then threatened another employee with harm if they failed to follow his instructions. He forced the employees to open the vault and "removed a substantial amount of cash" before fleeing on foot, the release said.

On March 17, the suspect struck a Harris Bank branch in Hinsdale. The bandit surprised bank employees on their way inside and forced them to open the vault yet again.

The "Day Break Bandit" is described as a black male, 20 to 25, 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-6 with medium build and dark hair. A get-away driver may have been involved in one or both robberies, but no description was available.

The FBI, Plainfield police and Hinsdale police are investigating. Anyone with information should contact the Chicago FBI at (312) 421-6700.
