I do not want to impinge on the success of the six month old Rama Thai Kitchen at 1320 Waukegan Road in Glenview But, there are problems, which can be solved with more management attention.. Before I get into that, I want to point out there is virtually no serious problem with the kitchen and the food which it creates and presents.
I was struck with the fragrance and fresh flavors of the cooking. We began with Tom Yum Shrimp soup, in a clear broth redolent of lime and lemon grass. Oriental mushrooms, cilantro, and of course shrimp add to the flavors. It is that balance of flavors which stands out, at once lemony, but not so much as to obscure other seasonings, and a delicate pepper spice foundation.
Among several appetizers, chive dumplings are steaming hot when served, filled with a mince of fresh chive and garlic. These can be enjoyed as is, but an accompanying chili pepper soy sauce adds more complexity. Similarly, we wolfed down stuffed chicken wings, deep fried boned morsels filled with ground chicken and seasonings. Crab rolls were similarly fried, with a flavor that clearly represents the main ingredient.
There are dozens of entrees. For seafood, we took a house specialty, a stir fried mix of various nauticals with fried basil leaves, peppers and onions influencing the flavor package. Though Pud Thai is a favorite, we ordered Pad See Ewe instead. Broad stir fried noodles with chicken and broccoli are relatively mild, and very satisfying. Similarly, chicken with garlic, perhaps the least complex of our choices, leaves little to be desired.
With all of this noted, Rama Thai Kitchen needs to improve service. I do not mean anything rude occurred, far from it. But, as professional as was the cooking, the service is slapdash and amateurish. We had to prompt again and again for even basic tasks, such as having plates cleared after each course.
I like Rama Thai Kitchen, at 1320 Waukegan Avenue in Glenview. I hope attention will be given to the service problems. Expect to spend about $40 a couple, plus add ons. I’ll hold off on a K/RATING, hoping for some improvement. (847-657-8429)
