CHICAGO (STNG) -- Chicago Police fatally shot a 16-year-old boy who allegedly pointed a gun at officers chasing him following a Thursday night home invasion in the West Side’s Lawndale community, police said.
Rakeem Nance, 16, of the 1900 block of S. Troy St., was shot in the 1900 block of S. Christiana Ave. and was pronounced dead at 11:32 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
An autopsy Friday revealed Nance suffered a gunshot wound to the back and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.
Officers from the Mobile Strike Force Unit patrolling in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue saw three males fleeing across a vacant lot about 9:15 p.m. Thursday, according to a police News Affairs statement. One of the suspects -- later identified as Nance -- was wearing a mask and was carrying a gun.
Officers pursued the males on foot and Nance pointed the weapon at assisting officers, prompting police to fatally shoot him., according to the statement.
The statement said the officer pursuing Nance repeatedly ordered him to drop his weapon, according to the statement. A weapon was recovered on the scene.
The other two males officers saw fleeing across the vacant lot made good on their escape, the statement said. None of the officers were injured.
Further investigation revealed the males committed a home invasion moments before the chase, the statement said.
Nance was enrolled in 9th grade last school year at Collins Academy High School, 1313 S. Sacramento Dr., according to Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond.
The Independent Police Review Authority and Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
