AURORA, Ill. (STNG) - No serious damage was done, but police and East Aurora school officials are looking into how a decorating activity ended up being such a huge mess.
According to a press release, the principal at East Aurora High School authorized five "student-leaders" to decorate the halls for graduation with streamers, toilet paper and school spirit decorations last Thursday.
The students were given parameters as to what areas of the building they were allowed to decorate and what type of materials were allowed, district spokesman Clayton Muhammad said.
According to police, the school resource officer met the students at the door, checked their backpacks and let them into the school, with the school's permission.
But, by using other entrances, the five authorized students ballooned to 35 to 40 students, Muhammad said. Those students brought several unapproved materials including tempra paints, eggs, whipped cream and food products, Muhammad said.
"[The school resource officer] neither let other students in nor approved of that," said Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli.
Ketchup, whipped cream, eggs and syrup were spread around the school's hallways. While no permanent damage was caused, an "excessive amount" of cleanup was required, Muhammad said.
Some of the students who were there that night volunteered to stay and help the maintenance staff.
"They saw clearly that it got out of control," Muhammad said.
Classes resumed as usual on Friday, although the cleanup was not finished.
Superintendent Jerome Roberts and other administrators are investigating and working with students who were involved to "rectify this matter in a fair manner," Muhammad said.
Like many high schools, East Aurora has had a tradition of frowned-on senior pranks, including stealing the metal Tomcat in front of the building.
Two years ago, several seniors were not allowed to attend graduation as punishment for participating in an end-of-the-year prank that involved spray painting school property, stealing a statue of the Tomcat mascot and causing $1,700 in damage.
Ferrelli said video is being reviewed as part of the investigation, but no one has been charged.
Senior class activities, including the senior honors night, the graduation rehearsal and graduation, will proceed as scheduled, Muhammad said. |
