Police Announce Forfeiture Of South Side Drug House

CHICAGO -- Police announced a successful forfeiture of a South Side house under the Illinois Drug Asset Forfeiture Procedure Act.

The two-flat in the 5200 block of South Artesian Avenue is the first residential property forfeited under the act, according to Chicago Police.

The police Narcotics Section recovered a kilogram of cocaine, a large quantity of marijuana and cash from inside the home in March 2006 and the police Asset Forfeiture Unit conducted a follow-up investigation.

An officer in the Drug and Gang House Section gathered evidence and presented the results to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office’s Asset Forfeiture Section. The State’s Attorney then presented the case in court and it was determined there was sufficient evidence to subject the property to forfeiture.

The Drug Asset Forfeiture Procedure Act gives property owners 30 days to appeal the court’s ruling. The owner did not appeal and the property has been turned over to the Illinois State Police for sale. A portion of the proceeds will be given to the Chicago Police Department.

“Any seizure of drugs and money is significant in itself, but this law magnifies the effect of good police work,” said Deputy Supt. Steven Peterson. “The effort of everyone involved has given this neighborhood the chance to rebuild itself and bring about long-term change.”
