CHICAGO (WBBM) - Drew Peterson's lawyer says the story that Peterson's stepbrother is telling a newspaper reporter about the weekend Stacy disappeared is all fantasy.
It was the last weekend in October, 2007.
Thomas Morphey, the stepbrother of Drew Peterson, told the Joliet Herald News that he helped Peterson move a blue barrel out to his car - a blue barrel that Morphey said he believed contained the remains of Stacy Peterson.
Drew Peterson's lawyer Joel Brodsky says Morphey's story would be damning - if it was true.
"There's probably things in the past that Morphey might have done - helping Drew unload a truck on some job project or something, that Morphey, in his mind, may have twisted around."
"Nothing against people with mental illness," Brodsky says, "but Tom Morphey is mentally ill... is a drug addict and an alcoholic."
Drew Peterson's step-brother--who fears he helped dispose of a body around the time Peterson’s wife Stacy vanished--is speaking publicly for the first time.
Thomas Morphey tells the Joliet Herald that Peterson, in late Oct 2007, told him his wife Stacy was cheating on him and that Peterson had to take care of the problem.
Morphey says Peterson then asked him to rent out a storage unit and later had him hold on to a cell phone for an hour that rang twice, the caller ID indicating it was Stacy.
Morphey says he then helped Peterson remove a blue barrel from the couple's Bolingbrook home.
Shortly after that, news broke that Stacy had vanished and Morphey says he took an overdose of pills.
Peterson’s attorney says Morphey is a liar with a history of mental illness and drug abuse.
Last week, the Joliet Herald reported that Morphey had been offered immunity by investigators for his testimony, but says he has yet to tell his story in court.
Peterson has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
