Overflowing Human Waste Shuts Down Loop Bakery Restaurant

CHICAGO (STNG) - Complaints from customers of a bad odor led city inspectors Thursday to a bakery in the Sears Tower, which they shut down after discovering human waste seeping into a kitchen sink.

Corner Bakery Café at 233 S. Wacker Dr. was closed after City Health Department inspectors discovered a major plumbing problem, causing waste to back up from the employee toilet into a kitchen sink and kitchen floor drain, according to a release from the department.

The inspection was triggered by complaints from customers about foul odors in the restaurant, the release said.

The sewage was ignored by Corner Bakery staff, who failed to clean up the waste and instead walked through puddles of waste water, tracking it throughout the facility, the release said.

Inspectors ordered bakery staff to throw away all food at the food preparation table, including turkey, ham, bacon, chicken salad, cheese, tomatoes and onions, the release said.

Inspectors also believe staff members were not washing their hands, and the bakery was cited for a broken hand-washing sink designated for food handlers, the release said.

Corner Bakery will remain closed until it has been completely cleaned up and brought back into compliance with city’s health regulations. Representatives will also face an administrative hearing Oct. 9 and an expected fine of up to $3,250.

The department encourages Chicagoans who believe a bakery or restaurant is operating in an unsafe manner to call 311.
