Tow truck driver cited in fatal Dan Ryan crash

CHICAGO (STNG) -- A Hazel Crest man was killed and six people were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
George Harris, 40, of 17121 S. Holmes, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 10:57 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A Saturday autopsy determined Harris died of multiple injuries from a motor vehicle collision and his death was ruled an accident.
The accident happened in the local lanes of the outbound Ryan (I-90/94) at 63rd Street, and involved a tow truck and three other vehicles about 4:35 p.m., according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper.
Six people were injured in the crash, four were in serious to critical condition, one in fair to serious condition, and one on good condition, according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Joe Roccasalva. Four others refused medical attention on the scene.
The van was rear-ended by a tow truck, whose driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving too fast for conditions, state police said. The driver’s name was not being released Saturday afternoon, and he was not injured in the incident.
The injured were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
An EMS Plan 1, which automatically sends five ambulances, was called for the crash at 4:48 p.m., Roccasalva said.
Illinois State Police are investigating.
