Nov 20: Face of the Defense

NEW FACE OF THE DEFENSE?
One voice is being heard more frequently and consistently regarding the Bears defense. It is three-time Pro Bowler Lance Briggs.  Weekly visits in the Halas Hall press room were typically handled by Brian Urlacher. Not lately.  On Thursday, Briggs pulled no punches regarding the situation the unit finds itself in with six games to play.

“How much can you take?” Briggs said. “It's going back to being accountable and going back and saying, "I’ve had enough. I’m tired of people scoring this much on our defense."

"Let’s start holding teams and putting it out there that we’ve had enough and we’re ready to make a stand. So, that’s kind of where we are.  You back yourself into a wall, and we’ve done that, you’ve got to start fighting back.”

“Our problems are not from our coaching. It’s not from the technique. It is from within ourselves. And that’s something we have to solve from within ourselves.”

“If we want it bad enough people will not be scoring 37-points on us.

"It’s a stick right into your pride. It’s a stick right into my pride I know that much.

"When teams run the ball at will, when they throw the ball all over us, it’s not cute; it’s not fun to see yourselves on someone else’s highlight film.

"At some point we’re going to have to grab ourselves and do something about it.”

Big money has been poured into the Bears defense, but Briggs claims he’s seen no sign of security hurting performance.

“I’ve heard it happens,” said Briggs. “I can only speak for myself. I’ve always played the game the same way. There’s been no change.  There’s never going to be a change. There’s no way you can convince me that these guys are playing satisfied. There’s no way that I would say that. No, I think poor execution, poor play, yes. Satisfied? Not this group.
