ORTON ABSENT Missing his second day of practice because of a sprained right ankle makes it difficult for Kyle Orton to realistically start at quarterback Sunday against the Titans.
“Practice is important. Every day you miss, it can’t help you any, but that’s how it goes sometimes,” Lovie Smith said. “Some guys can do it. If anyone can do it, it’s probably Kyle.”
Rex Grossman will start if Orton is ruled out. Rookie Caleb Hanie is preparing to be Grossman’s backup.
BROWN’S CALF Feeling a “twinge” in the second quarter last Sunday against the Lions forced safety Mike Brown to do something he normally resists. He didn’t try to talk himself back into the game, given four years of leg injuries. Brown practiced on a limited basis Thursday and feels he will be ready to play.
“Sometimes it’s not the player’s decision,” Brown said. “Some people above…higher on the totem pole have the final say. Hopefully, things go well.”
If Brown is unable to play, multiple options are in play to replace the Bears veteran including rookie Craig Steltz.
BRIGGS JACKED Preparing for the unbeaten Titans has boosted the adrenaline of Bears linebacker Lance Briggs who simply cannot wait for the opening kickoff.
“I don’t care what anybody says right now,” Briggs said. “I just hope they have a safe flight and they get good rest and they’re all loaded up and get on the field early and get this game going. This is a huge game!”
