New York Times May Start Chicago Local Edition

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A local Chicago edition of the New York Times may soon be competing with the struggling Tribune and Sun-Times, the newspaper announced recently.

The New York Times is planning for editions of the flagship national newspaper that are tailored to the Chicago area, and other major city markets, according to an article published last week.

The paper would be run by a "local partner," the article said.

In the comments section under the New York Times article, many Chicagoans have welcomed the idea,

"We need a solid, serious newspaper the level of The New York Times here in Chicago. Until the Tribune or Sun-Times can reach that level, I'll lovingly welcome the NYT to Chicago," one commenter wrote.

But not everyone was convinced. Another commenter wrote, "I love the Times for its international coverage; I love the Tribune for its local coverage. A mash-up will be interesting but I'm not convinced (remember BusinessWeek's local editions?)"

The Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times are both in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

At the Tribune, creditors are locking horns with real estate mogul Sam Zell, who took the paper private in 2007. Investment banks are owed $8.6 billion from Zell's takeover of the company, published reports have said.

Meanwhile, Chicago investor James Tyree has put up an offer for the Sun-Times Media Group, but staffers have resisted his calls for concessions. No other offers have come forward for the table.

There is already a San Francisco edition of the New York Times set to debut later this fall. That edition will involve two additional pages of Northern California news in the paper twice a week, but will also eventually be taken over by a local partnership made up of the University of California-Berkeley journalism school, KQED public radio and investor Warren Hellman.

The San Francisco Chronicle, that city's primary daily paper, is struggling to the point where a possible shutdown has been discussed.

The New York Times said it hopes to increase subscriptions and sell local ads in the markets where it starts local editions.
