Naperville Student Arrested for Bringing Pellet Gun to School
Naperville Sun Reporting
NAPERVILLE--A student at Jefferson Junior High School in Naperville faces trial as a juvenile, charged with bringing a pellet gun into the school Friday morning.
Classes went on without disruption at the northeast side .
The suspect, an eighth-grade boy, was found with an “air soft-pellet pistol” in his possession, said John Gustin, youth and community services commander of the Naperville Police Department.. A classmate who saw the gun in the youth’s locker told another student about it, and that pupil, in turn, notified the school’s resource officer, he said.
Gustin said the pistol fires rubber pellets. He did not know whether the gun was loaded or empty.
The youth was charged in a juvenile complaint with disorderly conduct, Gustin said. Police confiscated the pellet gun as evidence before releasing the boy into the custody of his parents.
Police and officials of Naperville School District 203 have a “no tolerance” attitude where firearms or look-alike weapons in schools are concerned, Gustin said.
“It’s a matter of zero tolerance, based on the climate we live in today and the possibility of danger to the school environment or disruption of the school’s operations,” he said.
The youth will likely face academic disciplinary measures in addition to the criminal charges. Supt. Alan Leis would not return comment on the incident.
