LA GRANGE, Ill. (WBBM/STNG) -- Police in LaGrange are investigating an accident that killed a 30-year-old Countryside woman who was hit while crossing a street with her children yesterday.
It happened about 20 minutes to noon Tuesday as 30-year-old Cari Cook was crossing the street at 47th and 8th Avenue with her son and daughter.
LaGrange Police Lieutenant Chris Noel says the 2-year-old daughter was in a stroller and the 4-month-old son was strapped to his mother.
Lieutenant Noel says a 45-year-old woman in a vehicle apparently did not see Cari Cook and hit her as Cook was near the curb.
"How the 4-month-old old did not sustain more serious injury or death is beyond us " Lieutenant Noel said.
Cook and her children were taken to Adventist LaGrange Memorial Hospital, where Cook was later pronounced dead, according to police.
Police say the 4-month-old had a broken leg. Cook's daughter was not injured.
Police say it was not a hit-and-run accident and the driver of the vehicle apparently was not exceeding the speed limit.
The Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Cook County State's Attorney's office are helping with the investigation, but the driver had not been arrested or charged at this point.
