HOMEWOOD, Ill. (STNG) -- A man allegedly trying to rob a Homewood bedding store with a toy gun Tuesday ended up with multiple stab wounds.
The man, who fled the store and later was arrested by Dolton police, was under police guard at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Hammond, Ind., as of Tuesday night, police said. They did not release his name because he'd yet to be charged.
Police said he entered The Bedding Experts, 17960 Halsted St. in Homewood, around 11 a.m. Tuesday and pointed a toy gun at an employee. The confrontation quickly turned into a tussle involving a knife that police described as similar to a buck knife. Police could not say where the knife came from.
The man was stabbed several times before fleeing. The employee suffered a serious knife wound on one of his fingers and was transported to South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest. Homewood Deputy Police Chief Dale Gustafson said neither of the men's wounds could be called life-threatening.
Police were able to get a description of the suspect's vehicle and its license plate from witnesses at the scene. A call was sent out, and Dolton police soon apprehended the suspect. Police were unable to say if he lived in Dolton.
Gustafson said Homewood police will need to extradite the suspect from Indiana. In the meantime, Homewood police are working with the Cook County state's attorney's office on charges.
"Charges won't be delayed, but getting him into our custody may take some time," Gustafson said.
