Man Charged In Hit-Run That Injured Cop

LISLE, Ill. (STNG) - A Lisle motorist was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and possibly drunken driving, after he allegedly struck a police officer in a hit-and-run crash late Sunday in the North Side's Lake View neighborhood.

Robert A. Heinzelman, 33, of 2766 Bristol Dr., apt. 101, in Lisle, was arrested about 4:30 a.m. by Chicago police. They had notified Lisle police about 2 a.m. to alert them that he might have been involved in a hit-and-run involving a Chicago police officer, according to Lisle police Sgt. Ron Wilke.

The car involved in the crash, which was found parked in the garage attached to the apartment complex at the Bristol Drive address, came back registered to Heinzelman, Wilke said. Heinzelman was then charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Wilke said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit said Heinzelman, who was arrested without incident, may also be charged with drunken driving.

About 11:30 p.m., the officer was standing in the street near the intersection of West Belmont and North Cambridge avenues when hit, according to the MAIU. The officer, whose condition was not life-threatening, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with lower back pain.

The motorist had been driving a blue Ford Focus that was seen fleeing south on Cambridge Avenue from Belmont Avenue, according to a Town Hall District police officer.
