Male nurse charged with sexually abusing ER patient
|
CHICAGO (STNG) -- A nurse is scheduled to appear in court late Tuesday on charges of sexual assaulting a patient at Weiss Memorial Hospital in February on the North Side.
James Whittington, 48, of the 5900 block of North Kostner Avenue in the Sauganash neighborhood was charged with criminal sexual abuse, according to police News Affairs.
Whittington was arrested about 7 a.m. at Weiss Memorial Hospital in the 4600 block of North Marine Drive, according to police.
The alleged incident took place Feb. 12 about 6:45 p.m. and involved a 57-year-old woman who was a patient in the emergency room at the hospital where he worked, according to police.
Whittington allegedly had injected her with morphine and while she was sedated had allegedly kissed her breast and then ejaculated into her hand, according to police.
Town Hall District police said the woman awoke and the male employee was was allegedly fondling her.
In a written statement issued by the hospital Feb. 13, hospital officials said the employee in question had been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation and that they were cooperating with local police fully and taking the accusation seriously.
“Our preliminary hospital investigation shows that the proper chain of command regarding notification and investigation was followed correctly. Patient safety, as well as the safety of our employees, is a top priority at Weiss,’’ the February statement read.
Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
Calls to the hospital seeking comment Monday night were not returned.
