Local Chinese Help Quake Victims

COMMENT ON THIS STORY

CHICAGO (WBBM)
- While the death toll from China's earthquake this week continues to grow, Chinese Americans here are working to help the victims.

WBBM's Steve Miller has details.

Many of the Chinese Americans in Chicago are originally from southern China, says the president of the Chinese American Service League.

Two staff members in the service league's office have family in the central Chinese province of Sichuan, which felt the worst of the earthquake.

The Chinese American Service League is raising money to help the victims, and the president's assistant, Emily Bock, who has spent time in Sichuan, says mountains are a challenge for relief workers.

"It's mostly winding, small, skinny roads through these mountains, and when you're trying to transfer a lot of goods and people into these areas, I think that it's pretty difficult."

The Chinese American Service League says it will most likely send its contributions through the Chinese consulate in Chicago.

The Chinese American Service League phone number is 312-791-0418.
