Landfill Stench Affecting Community
Julie Mann Reporting
|
(Lake County, Ill.) Stench from a landfill in Lake County reportedly forced several families from their homes on Thanksgiving Day.
The Lake County health department is preparing to issue a violation notice to the Countryside Landfill near Grayslake for the offensive odors detected miles from its property in recent weeks.
A spokesman for Waste Management claims crews are working to contain the stench which officials say is the result of high than normal moisture levels
Lake County board Diana O’Kelly of Mundelein tells the Daily Herald she has fielded 35 complaints about the landfill.
She says the odor was so back on Thanksgiving Day it forced some residents from their homes.
People living miles from the landfill have also reported physical problems. Health officials have received complaints from residents suffering from sore throats, headaches and respiratory problems.
