Joniak's NFL draft preview: running backs

THE RUNNING BACKS
THE QUARTERBACKS

CHICAGO (WBBM)
- It's NFL Draft week.  WBBM’s 'Voice of the Bears’ Jeff Joniak has studied the field and, with the Bears in mind, reports on the running backs.

Listen to Joniak's report:

Bears GM Jerry Angelo loves backs. He's drafted three in the past four years  in the first three rounds.

He hit on Matt Forte last year. No player in the league touched the ball more. No back had more catches.

Veteran Kevin Jones has re-signed with the promise of more work and Garrett Wolfe needs more touches to determine his long-term future.

Best all-around back this year is Georgia's Knoshon Moreno.

"There's a lot of great running backs in the NFL right now. I really love the way Adrian Peterson runs. Also LaDainian Tomlinson. My favorite running back was Walter Payton," Moreno says.

But Moreno has some traits that reimind of Barry Sanders and LaDainian Tomlinson. Pitt's LeSean McCoy is explosive. 35 touchdowns in 35 games.

Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells is a big back with a nasty stiff arm but who also carries toughness and durability concerns.

CHICAGO (WBBM)
- It's NFL Draft week.  WBBM’s 'Voice of the Bears’ Jeff Joniak has studied the field and, with the Bears in mind, reports on the quarterbacks.

Listen to Joniak's report:

Jay Cutler is the Bears' first-round pick this year, and next.

If he picks up where he left off in Denver, the Bears offense will take off.

Cutler played four years at Vanderbilt, but the top three quarterbacks in this draft are underclassmen, including Georgia's Matthew Stafford.

"I played in 39 football games in college. That's a lot of football games, probably more than some seniors have played in. It's a whole different ball game in the NFL but I understand what it takes to prepare and get ready," Stafford says.

However, 8 of the past 11 underclassmen taken in the first round have either not yet played to their potential or busted.

USC's Mark Sanchez is considered the most physically gifted to play under Pete Carroll, but he played only 16 games.

A 6' 6" frame carrying nearly 250 pounds is valuable for QB Josh Freeman of Kansas State. He ran a pro-style attack in the spread-happy Big 12. He can make every throw with a size to see downfield.
