CHICAGO (WBBM) - Gov. Pat Quinn heads for Copenhagen tonight to join Chicago’s 2016 bid team for its final push to host the Summer Olympics seven years from now.
Quinn says he’ll fly overnight to Copenhagen, and host a big reception for Illinois’ delegation there on Thursday afternoon. Friday, he says, he’ll be ready for the City’s presentation before the International Olympic Committee.
Quinn says that—with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama leading the U.S. delegation--the bid team will make a strong case for Chicago before the IOC. He says the presence of Oprah Winfrey will figure strongly too.
And, the Governor says he’s encouraged the bid will be successful. He says Illinois needs the jobs and benefits he believes the Olympic games would provide.
The International Olympic Committee will decide Friday if Chicago hosts the 2016 Summer Games. Chicago is a finalist along with Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
