Girl Who Elgin Mayor Helped, Apparently Helped Herself to His Cars
Beacon News Reporting
ELGIN-- Danielle Hutton, a teen with no place else to go and living in Mayor Ed Schock's home now faces a misdemeanor charge after taking his two vehicles without permission Wednesday.
"When I got up this morning, neither one was there," Schock said Wednesday of his 2007 Lincoln MKZ and 2003 Jaguar X-Type, usually parked in his driveway.
Schock reported his vehicles stolen. Neither he nor police initially saw the Jaguar parked about a block away.
Hutton, 19, apparently moved the Jaguar to get to the Lincoln. Somewhere along Route 53, the two driver's-side tires blew, probably due to potholes, Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda said. Hutton called for a tow truck, he said, which shows "she was planning on returning."
Hutton was taken into custody in Elgin, Swoboda said. She is being charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor. She was a student of one of Schock's daughters, Leslie, who teaches social studies at Palatine High School.
"She was in some very difficult circumstances there and was in need of a place to live. And so my wife and I took her in," Schock said. That was about eight months ago, he said.
She is set to graduate from Elgin High School in May.
Schock said Wednesday evening that he had not spoken with Hutton since her arrest, but he had some information from police, who questioned her.
"She's indicated that her intention was to use the cars without permission. Apparently, she's done this before without our knowledge."
Schock said before the misdemeanor charge had been filed that he would support "whatever the appropriate charge is."
After the City Council meeting Wednesday night, Schock said he believed Hutton had been making progress addressing her "issues."
"I'm just very disappointed," he said. "This is probably going to be a serious setback for her."
Swoboda said he expected she would be out on bond.
