Gary plans Michael Jackson memorial service

GARY, Ind. (AP) - The mayor of Michael Jackson's childhood hometown says plans are in the works for a Gary, Ind., memorial service next week for the pop singer.
Mayor Rudy Clay says city is tentatively planning a July 10 memorial for Jackson at The Steel Yard, the downtown baseball stadium where Jackson appeared in his last trip to Gary in 2003.
Clay says the stadium makes an ideal spot for a service, with its big screens and space for the anticipated large crowd.
Since Jackson died of Thursday in Los Angeles, the front yard of his family home in Gary has drawn crowds of people.
Clay said Monday he was talking with Jackson's family about arranging for the singer's body to lie in repose in Gary.
Clay said last week he would like to transform his downtrodden community into a mecca for the pop singer's fans. He said even he'd like to arrange to have the pop icon, who died Thursday at the age of 50, buried in Gary.
"If they can do it for Elvis Presley in Graceland, we can do it for Michael Jackson in Gary," Clay, 73, told The Associated Press.
