Fugitive found napping near Fox River

MONTGOMERY (STNG)  -- Authorities found an Aurora man — wanted in a series of warrants — sleeping on the bank of the Fox River near west suburban Montgomery early Saturday following a lengthy river rescue search.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Juan M. Solano, of the 900 block of South River Street in Aurora, was wanted on outstanding warrants in Kendall and LaSalle counties. He was also wanted on a warrant for criminal damage to property in Livingston County, according to a Montgomery police release.

Police initially responded to the east bank of the Fox River near Sherman Avenue on Thursday at 12:45 a.m. on a report of a man drowning. Officers were told by witnesses that a man approached them and asked to be hidden because police were chasing him. When the men refused, the man walked into the river and within minutes began calling for help, the release said.

Emergency crews were sent to the scene and conducted a lengthy river rescue search but were forced to end the search due to unsafe conditions and darkness, the release said.

The search began again early Friday and crews were able to locate the man near the Fox River Metro Sanitary District after Kendall County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man wearing only boxers who had just gotten out of the river.

The man allegedly told detectives he jumped into the river because he was being chased by police. That claim was later determined to be unfounded, the release said.

Solano was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment after being found. It is believed his shoes and pants were taken off by submerged rocks and tree branches, leaving him only in his boxers. He was able to crawl onto the bank of the river and fell asleep.

Firefighters from the Montgomery, Countryside, Aurora and Oswego fire departments assisted in the river rescue.

Police had no information regarding any charges against Solano Saturday morning.
