An NFL investigation is underway into possible tampering by the San Francisco 49ers. In October, the Bears reportedly discussed a trade with free agent linebacker Lance Briggs. Yahoo Sports reports, the Bears filed a grievance that claims the 49ers held contract negotiations with agent Drew Rosenhaus prior to the trade.
The 49ers claim they first talked trade with the Bears, then talked with Rosenhaus about a long-term contract. Under NFL rules, that would not have been legal, given the franchise tag Briggs played under with the Bears in 2007. A deal would have had to been done by a July deadline.
The end game is that if the 49ers are found guilty of tampering, they might have to forfeit a draft pick and or be subjected to a fine.
