Here's what we pulled out of an hour long interview session with Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis:
Admitted this is a Bears team in transition, in particular offensively, but it's not a rebuild.
Declared the Bears are Rex Grossman's best option in free agency. "I think this is his best situation," Angelo said. "That's my opinion. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't come back."
Suggested he's fully aware of the mistakes the personnel department has made and why they were made. "Usually the mistakes we made tie into a player's football character...his work ethic, his aptitude for the game, his desire to be great. Do you we need to do a better job of projecting a player's character? Yeah. Not easy to do."
Angelo now believes he has clarity in what he's looking for, eliminating the "gray" area in evaluations. Angelo said, "you still have to have tough guys, you have to have guys who are passionate about what they do and you have to have guys that forget themselves for others."
Angelo said coaches admittedly did not play receiver Mark Bradley enough in 2007.
He realizes he may not get signatures on new contracts for soon to be unrestricted free agents Lance Briggs, Brendan Ayanbedjo, and Bernard Berrian.
In reference to the offers he's made to the Bear free agents, Angelo said, "If it's all about money, and money is the bottom line, I don't want that player. I want a guy that wants to be a part of this, that is team oriented. Hey this is a lot of money. Nobody's poor here. We're talking about a lot of money."
Angelo said he will not place the franchise tag on Berrian, if the veteran receiver does not accept the Bears contract offer.
Angelo said the organization has discussed the possibility of moving John Tait back to right tackle if necessary.
Angelo said running back Cedric Benson has to compete and go out and win the starting job. "Injuries are a real problem for Cedric he's been hurt four times. Durability is a big deal when you're talking about running backs." The Bears will bring in another back.
