CHICAGO (WBBM) -- It's taken four years but the family of a fallen Chicago police officer finally has his military medals.
WBBM's Regine Schlesinger reports it took the intervention of Senator Dick Durbin to cut through the red tape.
Against the backdrop of the Gold Star Memorial near Soldier Field, Senator Durbin awarded the medals to the family of Officer Michael Gordon.
When Officer Gordon was killed by a drunken driver who broadsided his squad car 4 years ago, he left behind three children. At the time, they were 7, 5 and just 6-months-old.
Gordon's mother, Carol, says the family wants the medals he earned during his Army service in Bosnia and Korea so his children will have something to remind them of their father's devotion to his country.
Gordon says receiving the medals this week when another Chicago police officer, Richard Francis was killed, is especially poignant.
Retired police superintendent Phil Cline says he visited the wife and daughters of Officer Francis yesterday. In his words, "All their dreams were shattered." Cline now heads the police memorial foundation. |
