Tammy Duckworth's name reportedly discussed for lieutenant governor
CHICAGO (WBBM/CBS) -- There are reports today that Governor Pat Quinn wants Tammy Duckworth as his running mate in November.
Both Chicago newspapers report Quinn has discussed selecting Duckworth--an Iraq War veteran who currently is an assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs--as his choice for lieutenant governor.
Duckworth could not be reached for comment.
There are reports all five candidates who finished behind Cohen in last week's primary have expressed interest in filling out the ticket as Governor Quinn's running mate.
On Sunday, political neophyte Scott Lee Cohen quit as Pat Quinn's running mate.
It's been a bad week for Illinois Democrats, running for cover as Scott Lee Cohen's candidacy collapsed in a series of vivid scandals.
"For the good of the people of the state of Illinois and for the Democratic Party, I will resign," Cohen said on Sunday.
So who will replace Cohen on the Democratic ticket?
As Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Duckworth's been vetted by the FBI and approved by the U.S. Senate. If she's hiding anything, it's well hidden.
Raja Krishnamoorthi is another Asian-American whose name is in play. A narrow loser in last week's primary for comptroller, he grew up in Peoria, making him a real down-stater, potentially a plus on a Democratic ticket where literally everyone else lives in Chicago.
West Side State Rep. Art Turner came in second for Lieutenant Governor, but sources are discounting the chances Quinn would pick him.
