During the 2003 NFL draft, the Bears were poised to select Penn State defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy with the 14th pick in round one, but the Rams took him 12th. The Bears took Kennedy's Penn State teammate Michael Haynes instead. That was Lovie Smith's Rams defense that Kennedy struggled to crack as a rookie collecting just one tackle. Kennedy went on to start 30 games in four seasons with the Rams, including all 16 in 2006. In June, the Rams dealt Kennedy to Denver, but the Broncos released him during training camp. On the street for the first 14 weeks of this season, the Bears give Kennedy new hope.
"It's a different mentality for me right now," Kennedy said. "I'm not the young pup Lovie drafted in 03. I'm a man now. I've been through the grind. I know what it takes. It's humbling once you get released."
Kennedy who has battled weight problems in his career said he's 325 pounds, down from 333 when he was sent to Denver over the summer.
Bears head coach Lovie Smith would not reveal his plans for Kennedy next Monday night against the Vikings. However, the Bears are extremely thin up front defensively and could use a body. |
