Danny Davis dropping out of County Board president race
Regine Schlesinger Reporting
CHICAGO (WBBM/AP) -- One of the expected challengers to Cook County board president Todd Stroger is dropping out of the race.
Last week, one of Stroger's strongest potential challengers, Chicago Cong. Danny Davis (D-7th) filed nominating petitions to run against Stroger but, at the same time, hedged his bets by also filing to run again for his congressional seat.
Monday is the deadline to drop out of one of the races.
Davis said today he decided to seek re-election because he and three other black candidates running in the Cook County race would have competed for the same base of voters. He says he'll give further details at a news conference later in the morning.
Congressman Davis' departure from the Cook County race would leave Stroger with 3 challengers: Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown, Alderman Toni Preckwinckle and Water Reclamation District President Terry O'Brien.
Davis was first elected to Congress in 1996. The 7th district includes downtown Chicago and some western suburbs.
