Daley response to youth violence: more cops at some schools
CHICAGO (WBBM) - More police will be around some Chicago Public Schools - and along public transit - under Mayor Daley's plan to keep students safe.
It is the mayor's response to the beating death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert.
Derrion Albert is the latest student to die at the hands of other young people.
As Mayor Daley talked about his plan to put more police out and encourage after-school and Saturday programs for students, he was asked why an approach like that - tried before - will work this time.
"This time I think maybe people are looking in the mirrors and figuring out it's all of our problems."
Some aldermen are in favor of changing one South Side school - Carver - and letting some students go there instead of Fenger.
And whether it's neighborhood rivalry or gang rivalry that's causing the friction now - the aldermen believe opening up Carver might ease the friction.
But Mayor Daley doesn't seem to embrace that.
"The day that the city of Chicago decides to divide schools by gang territory, that's the day we've given up the city."
Schools CEO Ron Huberman declined to discuss the future of Carver. "We're not talking about it here," he said.
