Chicago Police shoot man at Elgin Toll Plaza after chase

ELGIN, Ill. (STNG) - Chicago Police shot a man in the I-Pass lanes of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway Tuesday night in northwest suburban Elgin -- about 35 miles after the chase began on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
Two Chicago Police officers were also hospitalized after the suspect attempted to run over the officers with a luxury sport-utility vehicle, authorities said.
Chicago Police conducting a narcotics investigation attempted to stop a vehicle observed in a narcotics transaction at 8:57 p.m., according to a statement from police News Affairs.
Police News Affairs could not say exactly where the pursuit started, but an Illinois State Police Elgin District sergeant said Grand Central District police pursued a vehicle from Chicago’s Northwest Side.
The officers activated their emergency equipment, but the vehicle refused to stop and fled west on the Kennedy Expressway (I-90), the statement said.
The officers stopped the vehicle on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) near Illinois Route 31 and ordered the person to exit the vehicle. Instead, the person struck one of the officers with the vehicle, according to the statement.
The officer, fearing for his safety and the safety of his partner, shot the person in the chest, the statement said. The sergeant said the shooting happened about 9:25 p.m. in the westbound I-Pass lanes at the Elgin Toll Plaza near Illinois Route 31.
Elgin Fire Battalion Chief Tim Michaels said a man in his 30s was taken in serious condition to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Elgin with gunshot wounds. The statement said the suspect is in “guarded condition.”
Michaels said the vehicle crashed into a guardrail and paramedics found the man with gunshot wounds nearby the vehicle. Nobody else was inside that vehicle.
The battalion chief said two Chicago Police officers were taken with minor injuries to Sherman Hospital in Elgin. The Chief said the officers were not shot and were hospitalized for examination. The statement said the officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A witness from the Elgin area reported seeing about six unmarked Chicago Police cars pass him on the tollway in pursuit of a Mercedes sport-utility vehicle. He said shortly after the I-Pass manual lane split, the police cars forced the SUV toward the wall and shooting began.
The statement said suspected narcotics were recovered. Mark Payne, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, could not say early Wednesday if a weapon was recovered.
Michaels said fire department crews left the scene by 10:05 p.m. State Police said the incident closed all outbound lanes for more than two hours.
The IPRA and Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
