Charges in Facebook threat

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STMW) -- A Naperville-area man on probation in a felony narcotics case has been charged with threatening the lives of his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend in messages he allegedly posted to the woman's Facebook account.
Christopher J. Bensfield, 19, remained Thursday night in DuPage County Jail in Wheaton on a $12,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear Monday in DuPage County Circuit Court on a felony charge of harassment via electronic communication.
Naperville police arrested Bensfield just after 9 a.m. Jan. 28 in his home at 28W681 75th St., in an unincorporated area near the far west-central part of the city.
Police Sgt. Gregg Bell said Bensfield is accused of using the Internet to send threatening messages to his ex-girlfriend, a 19-year-old Naperville woman. Bensfield allegedly posted the missives to the woman's Facebook account, vowing to kill or do serious harm to her and her new boyfriend, Bell said Thursday.
The woman put up with the messages "for a little while," repeatedly asking Bensfield to stop sending them, Bell said. She eventually went to the police station with printed copies of the alleged threats, he said.
Bensfield is on probation until September 2011 in connection with a felony drug-possession crime that occurred in August 2008 in Naperville, according to court records. A judge in October ordered Bensfield to participate in the DuPage County Sheriff's Work Alternative Program and fined him in that matter.
Court records showed he was also arrested Dec. 29 on a pending misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property following an incident on the 1300 block of Auburn Avenue, in the University Heights area of Naperville's far southeast side. Bensfield's parents reportedly live there.
He was also arrested in 2008 on a marijuana-related charge in Naperville, Bensfield in July of that year received court supervision and was fined in that case, court records indicated.
