Bull caught in Joliet neighborhood
|
JOLIET, Ill. (STNG) -- The running of the bulls started last week in Pamplona and had its first fatality in 15 years. Joliet's got under way early Sunday, and luckily nobody was hurt.
A wayward bull roamed the city's East Side for hours before animal control officers cornered it in a Herkimer Street yard and launched a barrage of tranquilizer darts at the animal. Will County Animal Control Director Leroy Schild then lassoed the dazed bull and brought it to his ranch in Mokena.
"He seems to be fine," Schild said of the 700-pound bull. "He's lying down a lot today. He's eating grass."
Police and animal control officers were alerted to the "large black bull running loose" around Jackson and Henderson streets about 12:30 a.m. They managed to get the bull into a yard, where it was shot with at least seven tranquilizer darts.
"After about an hour, the animal became drugged to the point where it could be roped and removed from the scene by Dr. Schild," a police report said.
The entire operation took about four hours, Schild said.
Schild said he is keeping the bull with one of his show horses, and the two animals appear to be getting along well.
By Sunday evening, Schild said, a Gougar Road rancher named "Raul" called claiming the bull. Schild said he had attempted to contact Raul to help corral the animal early Sunday but met with no success.
"Nobody wants to claim responsibility for these bulls when they're running loose because the don't know the damage or the liability," Schild said.
Fortunately, the bull caused no damage or injury officials are aware of.
The bull had been branded, Schild said, and Raul the rancher will have to identify the brand before taking possession of the animal.
Schild also said Raul told him the bull was imported from Mexico and will have to produce the paperwork that allowed him to bring the animal into this country.
