Streator Boy Remembered 5 Years After Unsolved Murder

CHICAGO (WBBM)  -- A 7-year-old Streator boy who was killed five years ago today will be remembered tonight at a vigil in front of Streator City Hall.

Dalton Mesarchik disappeared March 26, 2003, as he waited outside his home for a church van. His body was found the next day along the Vermilion River south of Streator. He had been beaten to death with a sledgehammer.  Charges have never been filed in connection with his murder.

The Illinois State Police say a $50,000 reward remains in effect for information leading to the arrest of whoever murdered Dalton Mesarchik.  Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Tad Williams says the case is still active and the investigation remains a state police priority.

The hour-long vigil will begin at 6:30 p.m. Speakers include Dalton's mother, Michelle and Captain Jill Rizzs, Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigation Commander.

Sixty balloons will be released throughout the program, representing 60 unsolved child murder cases. At the end of the vigil, seven balloons will be released in memory of Dalton, who would have turned 13 next month.
