Bond denied for three charged in Orland Park murder

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (STNG) -- Three men were denied bond Monday after being charged with the murder of a 21-year-old man allegedly shot in a drug deal gone wrong Saturday afternoon in southwest suburban Orland Park.
Brandon E. Hamrick, 21; Elry R. Lyle, 19; and Fadi A. Alkarim, 19, all of Orland Park, are charged with one count each of first-degree murder, according to Orland Park police.
Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy denied bond during a Monday hearing at the Bridgeview courthouse, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin. They are scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 8.
The men are accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old Jorge Mena at his home in Orland Park about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.
Mena was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. Saturday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. A Sunday autopsy determined he died of a gunshot wound to the back and the death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Mena was killed when Hamrick, Lyle and Alkarim allegedly tried to steal illegal drugs from him, police said.
According to court records, Mena received a call from Lyle about purchasing cannabis shortly before the three arrived at the home. Only Hamrick went inside -- armed with a handgun -- while Alkarim stayed in front as a lookout and Lyle went around the back, according to court records. Mena's girlfriend was also home at the time.
In the course of the deal, Mena's girlfriend heard something she thought was strange and went into the kitchen, where she saw Hamrick pointing a gun at Mena. She yelled for someone to call police and a struggle ensued between Mena and Hamrick, Conklin said, citing court records.
As the girlfriend attempted to call 911, Lyle ripped the phone from her hands and Hamrick and Mena continued to struggle.
The fight came to an end and while Hamrick and Lyle made their way out, Hamrick fired three shots into the home, striking Mena in the back. Lyle was also shot in the leg, court records indicated.
All three suspects then fled into nearby woods, where they were apprehended shortly after.
Friends said Mena lived in the apartment with his stepmother and father. Investigators questioned his girlfriend, Loreley Arvicu, 25, who her father said was the only witness to the shooting. Alberto Arvicu said his daughter had dated Mena for about five months.
Police recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the crime and a "significant amount" of cannabis on the scene, police said.
Orland Park police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force investigated.
