Man found dead after barricade situation identified

CHICAGO, Ill. (STNG) -- A barricade situation on the Northwest Side that lasted more than 12 hours ended Saturday night, when police entered the home to find a man -- who had been threatening to kill himself -- dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police responded to a home in the 3600 block of North Tripp Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday on a report of a man threatening to kill himself, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.
The man was reportedly terminally ill and threatening to shoot himself. A dog, also believed to be terminally ill, was originally in the home with the man, a source said.
"SWAT Team officers entered the home shortly after 8 p.m. when police were unable to establish communication with the man," according to a statement from police News Affairs.
The man, identified as Thomas Jacobson, 66, of the 3600 block of N. Tripp Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, was unresponsive and dead on the scene, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. Jacobson was pronounced dead at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center at 9:44 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but the exact cause and manner of death will be determined at an autopsy Sunday.
Police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said a dog has been released from the home and taken to an animal hospital in “stable” condition. She said the dog was not injured in the incident and was most likely ill prior to the barricade incident.
Before making entry, negotiators attempted to "peacefully resolve" the situation for more than 12 hours.
Students attending Saturday classes at Schurz High School were evacuated from the building due to the school's proximity to the incident, police said.
