John Cody Reporting CHICAGO (WBBM) - Comedian Andy Dick wore bloody clothes and carried a cleaver to urge McDonald's change the way its chickens are killed by suppliers in the United States.
Dick waved the cleaver at motorists driving by the Rock and Roll McDonalds on Ontario in downtown Chicago --- screaming "why did the chicken cross the road" as his young supporters chanted: "I'm hating it," a take-off on the McDonald's slogan: "I"m loving it."
Dick joined with PETA vice president Dan Matthews who says McDonald's in Europe requires a human chicken killing process whereby the atmosphere in a chamber is reduced -- putting the chickens to sleep, then to death.
Matthews says right now, McDonald's suppliers slit the throats of chickens, many of whom are still alive when they're thrown in a hot water bath to be defeathered.
McDonalds responded in a statement (full text below) which says it requires human treatment of all livestock, there's no proof European slaughter methods are any better than those here in the u.s. the company also says there isn't anyway to supply the chicken volume needed in the u.s. market...using European procedures.
