Ammonia leak prompts evacuation, 1 hospitalized
|
CHICAGO (STNG) -- A building on the Southwest Side was evacuated Saturday morning because of an ammonia leak.
An ammonia leak was reported about 11 a.m. at 4500 W. Ann Lurie Place (42nd Place) and the building was evacuated, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.
A person was working on the cooling system at Preferred Freezer when a leak caused ammonia to spray onto the worker, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. It is unknown where on the victim’s body he was hit.
The victim was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn in good condition, according to Perez, who said the person was “alert and talking.”
The leak was secured by 12:45 p.m., and crews are working to ventilate the building so employees can return inside, Curtis said.
