Alligator reported in Chicago River on North Side

CHICAGO (STNG)  -- An Animal Care and Control reptile specialist has been sent to the Chicago River on the North Side after someone reportedly spotting an alligator, police said.

The reptile was observed in the Chicago River near Damen and Fullerton avenues on a rock under a bridge, according to police News Affairs Officer Kevin Kilmer.

By the time police Marine Unit officers responded, it had gone back into the river, Kilmer said. The reptile, which may be an alligator, is believed to be between two and four feet long.

An Animal Care reptile expert remained at the scene at 3:30 p.m., Kilmer said.
