Second graders bring guns to school
Feb 28, 2009
(MERRILLVILLE, Ind.) Two second-graders have been suspended from Iddings Elementary School in Merrillville, Ind., one for bringing a cap gun to school -- the other for bringing a real gun.
According to Merrillville Schools Superintendent Tony Lux, the two students had talked on Tuesday about the guns they had at home and decided to bring them in the next day to show each other.
On Wednesday, one student came back with a cap gun, while the other came in with a small, loaded handgun.
Fellow students quickly alerted a teacher who confiscated the weapon.
"There was nothing malicious involved," Lux said. The boy did not threaten anyone with the weapon, but rather was letting kids peek into his book bag at the gun. "At this age, these kids are just thinking, 'Oh, wow, isn't this cool,' and then it creates a potentially, obviously dangerous situation."
Lux said the boy's parents said the gun came into their home over the weekend and the mother, upset, hid it away. "Unfortunately, [she] put it in a place where the children still found it."
Following the school's zero-tolerance policy with weapons, both students have been suspended for no more than 10 days. The boy who brought the real gun will likely face expulsion.
